Sustainable Development Goals
This project aims to provide an outdoor playground for the grade school students of Foundation University in Dumaguete City, Philippines.
Currently, there is no existing playground thus, grade school students opt to run along corridors, stairways and other places inside the campus. This made it difficult for teachers and parents to keep track of the kids and ensure their safety.
Playgrounds are already known and proven to benefit kids in the different aspects of their lives, and hence also that of their parents, teachers and the community. Since local playgrounds typically have safety issues, fall into disrepair or simply unattractive to the kids - leading to these being unused, this playground can serve as an example for other local schools and communities on how to create an effective play space.
Due to a limited space for this project, the playground’s play activities are concentrated on a mound at the center of the area which will still allow the kids to run around. A synthetic grass surface will be used for the areas that have high foot traffic. However, natural grass can grow on the remaining parts of the playground. The existing palm trees will be retained and hedges will be planted to serve as a low fence, resulting in a green space which blends back to the park that it will soon replace. Through this, the kids will experience playing in a space that can inspire and introduce them to what good design is about and simply let them be themselves and just have fun!
