The Union of Universities of Latin America and the Caribbean (UDUAL) is an international organization created  of universities and higher education institutions in the region, established in 1949 and aimed at establishing firm ties of cooperation, within a framework of respect and plurality, with a clear commitment to social linkage of higher education.  UDUAL focuses on affirming and further develop relations between universities in the Latin America region and other cultural institutions and organizations, such as UNESCO and the Inter-American Cultural Council of the OEA. 

It promotes the improvement of its affiliated institutions, promoting their relations with each other and with cultural organizations such as UNESCO, the Inter-American Cultural Council of the Organization of American States, among others. It proposes the orientation, coordination and unification regarding the economy and administration of Latin American universities, without profit motives.

It also provides assistance with the exchange of professors, students, researchers and graduates, along with their publications, studies, research and teaching materials. It places special emphasis on strengthening university principles of freedom in research and teaching and full autonomy.

Currently, the organization has more than 200 affiliated universities in 22 Latin American countries. It is a non-governmental, non-profit organization, recognized by UNESCO as a regional advisory and consultation body.
