About
The University of Coimbra is a public research university in Coimbra, Portugal established in 1290. The university is among the oldest universities in continuous operation in the world, the oldest in Portugal, and played an influential role in the development of higher education in the Portuguese-speaking world. In 2013, UNESCO declared the university a World Heritage Site, noting its architecture, unique culture and traditions, and historical role.
The contemporary university is organized into eight faculties, granting bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degrees in nearly all major fields. It lends its name to the Coimbra Group of European research universities founded in 1985, of which it was a founding member. Enrolling over 25,000 students, more than 20% of whom are international, it is one of Portugal's most cosmopolitan universities.
Sustainability
The University of Coimbra is strongly committed to the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and has launched various cross-institution initiatives related to sustainable development. In line with the 2019-2023 Strategic Plan, the UC intends to be an increasingly qualified university to build the future in a sustainable and socially responsible way. Aligned with and co-responsible for a more just, equitably developed society that respects environmental sustainability, the Strategic Plan is an essential support also regarding the monitoring of the SDGs.
Sustainability and social responsibility represent behaviors and actions that are transversal to the entire institution, and which are always present, clearly contributing to raising the levels of local and global development. Our training offer, innovation and research projects, and I&D units across different areas of knowledge contribute to the achievement of all the SDGs.
