France Universités as defined in Article L233-1 of the French Code of Education, is composed of the directors of universities, national polytechnic institutes, écoles normales supérieures, grandes écoles, and research and higher education clusters (PRES).

The Conference of University Presidents (CPU) is composed of the directors of universities, national polytechnic institutes, écoles normales supérieures, grandes écoles, and research and higher education clusters (PRES). For 40 years, it has been representing and protecting the interests of its member institutions. The CPU participates actively in the public debate on education issues, and plays a proactive consulting and negotiating role with the public authorities, the various higher education and research networks, social and economic partners and national and international institutions. At a time of profound change in the higher education and research sector, the CPU also supports presidents in their new responsibilities and promotes the French university system and its values.
