About
The Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP) (Meritorious Autonomous University of Puebla) is the oldest and largest university in Puebla, Mexico. Founded on 15 April 1578 as Colegio del Espíritu Santo, the school was sponsored by the Society of Jesus during most of the Spanish colonial era before turning into a public college in 1825 and eventually into a public university in 1937. BUAP has a number of campuses throughout the state of Puebla. Its four major zones in the city of Puebla include the University City – which houses the faculties of physical sciences – and the Health Area, where the Schools of Nursing and Medicine are based. BUAP also has nine regional sections, three near-autonomous ‘foreign academic units’, and six high schools.

The university was chosen as the 2019 finalist for the Sustainability Institution of the Year award for a series of actions and outcomes designed to promote environmental restoration and sustainability on campus. Some of these efforts include:

ii) training student engineers in renewable energies
iii) collecting rainwater to supplement on campus water consumption
iv) planting more than 10,000 trees
v) recycling more than 50 tons of carbon dioxide
