Sustainable Development Goals

As a public-spirited university, Melbourne is committed to promoting sustainability through its research and education programs. Universities have a special role and responsibility in confronting the challenges of climate change and environmental stewardship. The University of Melbourne is dedicated to confronting these challenges both through research and by translating best practice into action on campus. Operationally, the University is taking steps to substantially reduce its environmental impact. Melbourne aims to establish itself as a model of sustainability. It has set a target to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.

Objectives

Provide a world class sustainable campus environment by:

• establishing and progressing the Sustainability framework for the University
• engaging and empowering staff, students and the community on Sustainability issues
• establishing University-wide targets to reduce energy, water, waste
• prioritizing and managing Sustainability projects to meet or exceed our targets
• fulfilling our commitment to Sustainable Building design
• achieving a Sustainable Campus

Main Activities

On campus we strive to discover healthier, more efficient, more sustainable ways to operate by focusing on these eight sectors of University life: Energy reduction, Water use, Recycling and Waste, Sustainable Transport, Sustainable Buildings, Sustainable Procurement, Sustainability Research, and Sustainability in the curriculum.
